On the December 17th airing of Lucha Underground, Dario Cueto, storyline owner, revealed the championship belt for his fledgling promotion. Many have wondered for months if there would ever actually be such a thing. So far the biggest prize offered in Lucha Underground has been a $100,000 payoff that bounced from Big Ryk to Johnny Mundo. Cueto claims that the belt was crafted out of gold taken from each of the seven Aztec tribes. Really nice way to make the title prestigious by connecting it to the heritage that luchadors and luchadoras take so much pride in. That was truly a nice touch.
So far everything Cueto and company have done in Lucha Underground has been smart. There is now an air of intrigue surrounding the promotion, as I and others thought the title was being awarded the same night. The show opened with a 10-way match, which was won by Fenix. The second match of the show was a 10 person battle royal, which Mil Muertes won after he tossed out Johnny Mundo. Following the match, Dario Cueto brought out both competitors to the center of the ring. He later joined them while brandishing the belt over his shoulder. He announced that in the first Lucha Underground episode of the new year, he will award the title to the winner of his brand new match, Aztec Warfare. I'm not the spoiler reading type, but the way Cueto made it sound, Aztec Warfare was going to be some sort of War Games type cage match. He said that the winner of tonight's main event match between Mil Muertes and Fenix would earn the 20th and final entry into Aztec Warfare. Subsequently, the loser of the match would draw the first entry in Aztec Warfare. My only guess is that Aztec Warfare is a War Games match with weapons, sort of like TNA's Lethal Lockdown.
The show ended with Dario Cueto in the dungeon with his prisoner, showing him the title belt. There has been much speculation as to who this mystery person is. Cueto has been touting him as a beast, so my only guess right now is Hernandez. Originally I thought it was Homicide, but I know Hernandez is the much bigger of the two. Only time will tell who this monster is that Cueto has locked up in the dungeon. It has to be someone that the public knows, so I highly doubt it's strictly an indie guy. I would say it was Rhino, but as of this writing I'm not certain of his contract status with TNA Wrestling. Rob Terry, perhaps? It definitely isn't PWG alum Brian Cage, since his promos have already started airing on Lucha Underground.
Sidenote: Former WWE Diva Angela Fong is still stalking around in the crowd. It'll be interesting to see how she plays into these current stories. Also, who is Konnan bringing in from Mexico to exact revenge on Chavo Guerrero? Sexy Star has already threatened him with the return of Blue Demon, Jr. Atlantis, maybe? Octagon? El Hijo del Santo? If it ends up being Myzteziz I'm gonna be really disappointed!
