(I took the week off from writing because of the holidays. Sorry.)
For what some people said was going to be a throwaway Raw, a lot happened on Monday night. Daniel Bryan posted an ominous tweet about being at a crossroads in his life. He came out during the show and cut a long promo about how the fans made him, and he wouldn't be where he was without them. He choked up talking about his father's death, and his life altering injury. It appeared that Bryan was about to retire. However, it had not been stated in the press about any changes in his rehab. For months there was speculation that he'd need a second surgery. WWE is good about giving us updates on his condition. Instead, he announced his entry into the 2015 Royal Rumble.
The Authority's power has officially been restored thanks to Seth Rollins and Big Show's plan coming to fruition. The set up for this was actually brilliant. During the Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins match, Big Show came in and dropped the announce table on top of Reigns, essentially taking him out of action. Throughout the show they were pushing Big Show's loyalty to The Authority, and why he stuck with Seth Rollins. They also built up the angle by showing how much Edge (who was the special guest along with Christian) and John Cena respected each other. This was actual good storytelling done by the WWE, and a great way to end 2014.
Edge & Christian were in the ring interviewing Seth Rollins, Big Show and J&J Security. The events suddenly unfolded when Christian was struck in the head with the Money in the Bank briefcase, and Edge was pinned down by Big Show. Seth Rollins called out John Cena and announced that unless he did the right thing, Rollins would break Edge's neck with a Curb Stomp. As you know, Edge retired from wrestling because of a bad neck. Rollins held his foot over Edge's neck while John Cena rushed out for the save. Rollins kept Cena at bay at ringside and told him to bring back The Authority. After Survivor Series Vince McMahon made the decree that only John Cena had the power to bring The Authority.
After a few tense moments of Rollins telling Cena that Edge is a father to a child, and how he'd be a cripple for the rest of his life, Cena finally relented and agreed to bring The Authority back into power. Cena then jumped in the ring to save Edge, only to be given a knock out punch by Big Show and then Curb Stomped by Rollins, while Edge rolled out of the ring. Rollins, Big Show, J&J Security celebrated on the stage with none other than Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman. King of Kings played, and The Authority came out with champagne and shook hands and posed for pictures with everyone.
Interesting now that the main event match at Survivor Series has become pointless. Who knows what will happen next week. I highly doubt Sting is going to be making appearances this early in the year. As far as I know he won't be back around until after WWE's Fast Lane PPV. I wonder how this will play out now that Randy Orton and Roman Reigns are back.
Notes:
- Cesaro cuts a passionate promo talking about how this should have been his year, and he isn't interested in connecting with the fans. Bad News Barrett then comes out and squashes him in 3 minutes.
- In one of the dumbest blow offs to a feud since Brie and Nikki making up because "blood is thicker than water," after winning the WWE Tag Team Championship, The Usos, and Naomi announce that they were playing Miz the entire time. To what end I do not know. None of this played into the title match at all. Miz was at no point distracted by Naomi at all. The entire thing was pointless and stupid. Consider Miz and Mizdow buried.
- The Ascension debut in their Powers of Pain/LOD/Demolition knockoff gimmick. This was not good. WWE took the most feared tag team on the NXT roster and turned them into a bad 80s throwback with face paint and football pads. No buys!
- I became a fan of Ryback after he came out and told us his backstory. Really good.
